Waiting for Oprah

"Waiting for Oprah by Mary Miller was a delight from start to finish. The plot involved five women and their beloved book club.  Oprah, the icon of everything our society holds dear, was coming to visit them.  The excitement was felt differently by each of the club members and became a springboard for their personal revelations.  The use of subtleties in the play to provide the audience with character identification, sympathy and convincing pathos - resulting in a great theatrical experience."   Burt Saidel, FutureFest Dayton Playhouse Review, Dayton, OH.

"My Personal scorecard, starting with the best, read this way: #1 Waiting for Oprah by Mary Miller." Dayton Daily News, - Terry Morris Theatre Critic

"Mary Miller's Waiting for Oprah, an excellent, moving account of female bonding, came down with the Audience Favorite from votes tabulated over the FutureFest festival.  Miller's heartwarming dramedy offered a poignant look into the lives of a diverse group of book club members who grow to a better understanding of each other while anticipating the arrival of the titular talk-show icon."  Russel Florence, Jr.  Dayton City Paper, Dayton, OH

Mia's Monologue - Published in Audition Monologues for Young Women Edited by Gerald Lee Ratliff - This new collection of monologues features a number of familiar theatre voices and a host of new voices that are just now beginning to emerge. All of the playwright, however, share a common denominator: They offer fresh, imaginative character portraits for young women that capture vivid attitudes, images, and speeches of realistic characters drawn from real life role models.

"We've always wanted to produce Waiting for Oprah but were waiting for the right opportunity..." Windham Theatre Guild, Willimantic, CT

"Thanks for the rights to perform Waiting for Oprah..." James Nelson, Brookville Community Theatre, Brookville, OH

Waiting for Oprah Making Its Iowa Premiere - "With Oprah in the title, it may come as a surprise to some that the play has little to do with the mega-popular television host. The first scene is heavy on Oprah talk and comedy as the women anxiously await her arrival.  However, as the women continue to wait, and it becomes more likely that Oprah isn't showing up, they begin to open up to one another.  Where the play truly shines, in fact, is when it tackles serious issues.  All the characters are dealing with very different problems - surviving cancer, dealing with Alzheimer's disease, life after divorce, coping with the death of a mother and creating a personal identity - that hit hard because they're all very relatable topics. The women also are different from one another in ways that extend beyond their problems, from age and place in life to personality, and this helps flesh out the five characters as real people with real quirks and problems.  The unique personalities of the characters move the play along without the need for gimmicks."  Michael Leach, The Fairfield Ledger, Fairfield, IA

Don't Wait To See "Oprah" - "Waiting for Oprah is hilarious!  It was so well done that I intend to see it again! During the play, the depth of the characters is revealed as they discuss and deal with their own problems in a very humorous way.  The cast members feed off one another and deliver their lines beautifully.  You just don't want the play to end!"  Pamela Permar Shierling, The Islander, St. Simons Island, GA

The Wait Is Over -  "It's here and it's downtown. For a wonderful night of entertainment and laughter, Waiting for Oprah by Mary Miller is the hot ticket for the summer." The Brunswick New, Brunswick, GA

"The light can be a metaphor for anything that is different, that people may not necessarily be able to explain or understand.  It's not a religious play, but it is very spiritual."

Virgin Tears on Wyoming Avenue

VIRGIN TEARS IS A BRILLIANT PRODUCTION

"To call a play brilliant could be going out on a limb, however, I feel  VIRGIN TEARS deserves this praise.  The dialogue is clever, crisp, and well-thought-out. You are drawn to the characters as they try to rekindle old relationships. There are many issues within this household with all kinds of twists and turns. Ultimately the play is about anger, pain, fear, and hope." Theatre Conspiracy - Island Sun Review - Ft. Myers, FL

"Three local actresses bring the distinctly different daughters to life with finely nuanced characterizations.  The plot and performances effectively draw viewers into the world of the play.  Miller's story is engaging, her dialogue is cleverly written, and she adds spiraling dramatic subtext to the sibling story."  The  News Press, Ft. Myers, FL

"VIRGIN TEARS is a play worthy of seeing for a variety of reasons.  There are thought-provoking lines and scenes, and various approaches to faith that will instigate post-play discussions.  There is a scene where Adele and Chandler tell their individual stories in alternating lines that is breathtaking.  And the scenes where the sisters interact with each other with honest affection ring true.  The characters change and grow over the course of the play, some in very surprising ways.  The play also raises some interesting concepts about God: whether we view God as judgmental  and punishing, or all-loving and forgiving.  And how true is faith that focuses on God to the exclusion of living people?  Unlike, Thomas Wolfe, playwright Mary Miller seems to believe that maybe you can go home again, and that miracles sometimes take place in real flesh and blood, not in wooden statues."  Naples Daily News, Naples, FL

A-True-Classic-In-The-Making - VIRGIN TEARS is the next in Alley Stage's Percolating Play Reading Series. "After years of separation, three sisters come together at their ancestral home for a hopeful stigmata viewing of a statue of the Virgin Mary in their backyard. The plot revolves around the homecoming of Chandler, who after being gone for many years returns home because her older sister, Adele, believes she has seen their backyard statue of the Virgin Mary cry. While waiting to see if the stature will weep again, the sisters put their differences aside and come to some very touching realizations that are both funny and distressing, and filled with fantasy and wonder."  Jenny J. Catoe - The Marietta Daily Journal,  Marietta, GA

"The audience will be captivated by the roller coaster of emotions that the play provides.  It is hysterically funny in places, poignant in others, and controversial throughout."  Brunswick News, Brunswick, GA

"For those who have moved away from their childhood homes, the Brunswick Actors Theatre production of Virgin Tears on Wyoming Avenue may tug at some emotional chords.  Whether returning home to your family and friends is a dream come true or a nightmare-turned-reality, everyone can picture themselves falling back into the same routine they once took part in for many years."  Ryan Steward, Brunswick News, Brunswick, GA

A Christmas House

The Director's Company Staged Reading with Elizabeth Lawrence

New York City, NY

"The theme of embracing one's dreams is evident in A Christmas House.  Based on a true story, the play is a funny love story about one man's family and the house he built on St. Simons Island."

Brunswick News, Brunswick, GA

"A Christmas House will strike a chord with everyone."

The Islander - St. Simons Island, GA

"This is the perfect play for anyone with sisters, no matter what age they are. This play made me laugh out loud and cry from joy.  It is a family that is familiar to a fault.  The ultimate acceptances and ties to family love brighten the spirit. I enjoyed the quiet strength of a couple married and in love over 30 years. "   Five Stars Amazon Top Ten Reviewer, Marjorie Smith Janesville, WI

"Throughout  A Christmas House, you can see the story played out.  Mary Miller skillfully creates the characters personalities.  You become emotionally involved in the story as they become real people in a real world.  For me, it is hauntingly reminiscent of the house my father just finished building.  He just turned 70, and is still working on the downstairs kitchen!  I could relate to the buckets of nails being dumped over, the dusty house and the smell of concrete. In the end, you see the characters' faults and strengths and laugh at how human they all are."  Amazon Top 10 Reviewer Rebecca Johnson: Rated - Five Stars

"Funny and inspiring, A Christmas House is the perfect story to tell during the Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas season." Rev. Canon Tom Conley, St. Philip's Cathedral, Cathedral Times - Atlanta, GA

A Christmas House is a love story of an unforgettable Christmas.  It is a wonderful play for anyone who has ever built a house, worried about getting old, been single, been married, experienced sibling rivalry, delivered a baby or spent the holidays with their relatives!  It will touch anyone who has waited until the prime of their life to embrace their dreams."  Brunswick Actors Theatre, Brunswick News, Brunswick, GA

In the Kitchen: Thoughts on Love, Sex, & Aging

WINNER - Best Play of the Year NETC John Gassner Memorial Playwriting Competion

"Congratulations! Your play, In the Kitchen, Thoughts on Love, Sex, and Aging, has been awarded first place in the John Gassner Playwriting Competition. I thought In the Kitchen was by far the best of this year's finalists. At first, I had the awful suspicion that it was going to be a copy of The Golden Girls - three middle-aged women and an elderly woman sitting around the kitchen talking about sex and aging - but I was more than pleasantly surprised to find a funny, moving look at family and the choices we have to make (as well as sex and aging.)  I laughed out loud more than a few time while reading it.  Again, congratulations!"  Dave Frieze, Director NETC Theatre Conference, Westford, MA

"When Kate's mother inadvertently leaves the gas stove burning all night, it sets in motion of chain of events and family confrontations over the nature of aging and what to do if you're lucky enough to get old.  Mixing childhood memories with real life events put mother and daughters Kate, Lara, and Amy on a collision course  with each other that's often as hysterical as it is heartbreaking."  Brunswick Actors Theatre, Brunswick News,  Brunswick, GA

"Several years ago the Readers' Theatre group at our retirement community performed Ferris Wheel; it was well-received and we want to do it again.  In looking for a companion piece, I spent many hours reading one-acts until I had the brainstorm of looking at what else you might have written that would suit our performers and performance space, and was delighted to find Mulberry Lane.  (I should  have looked there first, I know!) Most plays designed for "Seniors" are sappy.  Yours are lively and touching. Keep writing."  Joanne Malin, Carroll Lutheran Village,  Westminster, MD
